$50 American Buffalo Gold Coin History:

The gold American Buffalo, the first pure 24-karat gold bullion coin produced by the United States Mint, was first introduced in 2006 after the Presidential $1 Coin Act in late 2005. The American Buffalo 24-Karat gold bullion coin was designed by a once student of Saint  Gaudens, James Earle Fraser to showcase the beauty of the Native American West.  The obverse side of the gold American Buffalo features the profile of a Native American man, while the reverse side features the silhouette of an American bison standing in profile, modeled after "Black Diamond," a popular attraction in the New York Zoological Gardens in the early part of the 20th century. The images were originally featured on the popular "Indian Head" or "Buffalo" nickel, minted in the U.S. from 1913 to 1938.

The American Buffalo Gold coin is the first .9999 fine 24 karat gold coins ever to be made by the United States Mint with a face value of $50.
