In 2013, the Mint began to laser micro-engrave the maples with radial lines and a miniature maple leaf mint mark which contains the coin's year of issue when viewed under magnification. This digital authentication iis called Bullion DNA and provides a visual security feature for all maple leaf bullion coins minted from 2013 and on. Security is further enhanced with the introduction of MINTSHIELD SURFACE PROTECTION. These security features are applied to all Silver and Gold maples.
